Balestrate: the hidden gem of Western Sicily

Welcome to Balestrale, the quiet wonder of Western Sicily! This charming seaside town lies in the heart of the Bay of Castellammare, just 25 km southwest of Palermo. If you are looking for an authentic Sicilian atmosphere, beautiful sandy beaches and unforgettable gastronomic experiences, Balestrate is the perfect choice for you!

Historic charm and modern comfort
Balestrate was originally known as “Sicciara”, which refers to the squid (sicci) – a symbol that still appears on the town’s coat of arms. The locals still call themselves “sicciaroti”, or “squid people”. The origin of the town’s name is a unique legend: the Spanish king used an arrow (balestra) to define the boundaries of the town, hence its name.

In the 19th century, English wine producers (Ingham, Woodhouse, Whittaker) and the investments of the famous Florio family made the town prosperous, which at that time played an important role in the production of the famous Marsala wine.

Wonderful beaches and marine experiences
The main attraction of Balestrate is its two beautiful sandy beaches, one of which stretches all the way to Castellammare del Golfo . Most of the beaches are free to visit, although in summer you will find some pay-bridges where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas.
The pride of the city is its port, ideal for water sports and boating.

The crystal clear water and fine sand provide the perfect place to sunbathe, swim or simply admire the setting sun.

Gastronomic paradise
Start your day with a real Italian breakfast at the cafés on Via Madonna del Ponte, where fresh cornetto (croissants) and creamy cappuccino await you . Don’t miss the local speciality, brioche con gelato, which is ice cream on a bun – a speciality from southern Italy.

For lunch or dinner, try the fresh seafood, classic pasta alla norma or caponata . The local wine tradition lives on, so be sure to try the local Grillo and Nero d’Avola wines.
Natural wonders and active recreation
There are two coastal forests in the Balestrate area: the larger one is rarely visited and is perfect for quiet walks in the shade, while the smaller one has stone barbecue areas and tables where locals often barbecue on Sundays.
The town is an excellent base for many excursions to the sights of Western Sicily, such as:
- The medieval town of Erice
- The church and amphitheatre of Segesta
- The salt marshes of Marsala
- Monreale, the Moorish and Viking dome of wonder.
- The historic centre of Palermo
- Corleone, a small town famous for its mafia.
